As many of you have probably guessed, the studio will be closed for the next two weeks starting Monday. This decision was made based on two major factors:
1. The point of a mass closure is to slow down the spread of this virus and reduce the strain placed on our medical personnel and facilities. Closing schools and limiting social gatherings while continuing to have dance classes weakens this strategy. It is my responsibility as a member of this community to do my part in encouraging decreased social interaction for the time being.
2. I started this as a family business, and it is still, very much, a family business- only now I have spent years getting to know many of your families. When I make decisions I think about my own children and how they will be affected. We know children seem to be carriers of this virus and tend to recover quickly - if they have symptoms at all - and that most of our children will be ok through this. But we also know that anyone with a weakened immune system is at risk. I know how many of my students are already fighting/recovering from the flu, strep, and stomach bug. I'm also taking into account my students (and their siblings) with asthma and difficulty breathing. I love your kids. I can't risk exposing a child with breathing conditions to a child that may be carrying a virus and not showing symptoms.
When my children aren't at the studio with me they are with two sets of grandparents. I have to consider what they will be spreading to them - but then I also think about how many of my dancers are brought and/or picked up from the studio by grandparents. Or how many of my students live in homes with grandparents. I think about our teacher - and expectant mother - Haley, and how this could affect her or her baby girl. The people and families of this studio mean so much to me - I would rather come out of this with every single one of you thinking I over reacted than feel in any way that I have helped spread this virus to your house and your people.
So... what now? We have a long 2 weeks ahead. I believe dance is beneficial - both mentally and physically - so we've got some plans in mind for some daily dance challenges and activities we can do to both stay connected and keep moving. I'm sure as time goes on we're all going to be looking for things to do so I hope this will be fun for your dancers. I'll use an assortment of platforms to send activities starting Monday - I know Internet is not reliable in all parts of the county so we'll find some different ways to participate.
Schedules will be adjusted. I will start emailing individual classes Monday with some updates to our April calendar. We were already going to have classes during the Mathews Spring Break - so we're hoping to be full force starting that week.
As of right now, recital will go on. The assistants and I may have to be on stage more than we would normally prefer, but we've got this! Recital packets will come out by email this week - if you don't have access to a printer please let me know and I'll be happy to mail your packet to you.
Wash your hands. Hug your kids for me. I will miss them like crazy. We have an amazing group of dance families - please let me know if you or your family needs help in any way and we'll see what we can do to assist!
Classes are held on the third floor of the Halcyon Building, located in Historic Mathews Courthouse.
